Educational Excursions

Educational Excursions were arranged on 19th August, 2023 for Std V to X who were accompanied by their teachers to the following places:

Std V - Carter Road Mangrove:

On 19th August, 2023, Saturday a field trip was organized by the class teachers of Std V for their students to Carter Road (Bandra) Mangroves. Approximately 70 students reported to school at sharp 7.50 am. Before visiting the place, Ms. Ashnima briefed students about mangroves, their types and importance in our life with the help of short videos and pictures. The students walked all the way to the location around 8.30 am. Mr. Rehan Merchant, a resident of the same vicinity helped the students and the teachers know more about Mangroves. He explained the subject in a very simple way by answering questions like - what are Mangroves, where do they grow, what are the climatic conditions required for them, how they get planted, how they help us to protect from natural calamities, how they function differently from other plants and so on. Students also got a firsthand experience to see the mangrove seeds and their functions. Different types of mangrove roots were also shown to the students. The students walked back and reached school at around 10:30 am. This field trip helped them to know more about mangroves and their importance for the ecosystem.

Std VI - Bandra Fire Station:

57 Students of Std VI along with four teachers visited the Bandra Fire Station for an educational excursion from 8am to 10am. The students got an opportunity to see and understand how the fire brigade functions, the different vehicles used, the equipment and things loaded on the fire truck for fire fighting. Information about the criteria to join the fire brigade was shared with the students.

Std VII - Marine Aqua Zoo & Chaitya Bhoomi, Dadar:

Students of Std VII of SJCHS had gone for an Educational Excursion to Aqua Marine Zoo, Dadar and Chaitya Bhoomi at Shivaji Park, Dadar on 19th August, 2023. 100 students along with their teachers, Ms. Rupal Shah, Ms. Sabina Gonsalves, Ms. Simin Shah and Ms. Leena Vairale  went through Bandra Worli Sea Link and visited Chaitya Bhoomi, The Deck to view Sea Link, Buddhist Stupa, Glow Garden and Aqua Marine Zoo at Shivaji Park, Dadar. The students were given historical information about The Bandra Worli Sea Link, Chaitya Bhoomi, Stupa and The Mahim Fort. The students also gained hands-on experience of animals like Green Lizard, Iguana, Rabbit and turtle at the zoo. The students were given refreshments too and had a lovely time returning home with fond memories.

Std VII & VIII - Vikhroli Mangroves

97 students of the Nature Club from Std VII & VIII visited the Vikhroli Mangroves on Saturday, August 19th, 2023. The Godrej mangrove area is the second largest green lung of Mumbai, conserved and scientifically managed by the Godrej Group. This internationally acclaimed forest is a leading case study for symbiosis of nature and industry today. The Godrej Forest, situated on the Western bank of the Thane Creek shelters 16+ mangrove and mangrove associate plant species, 13 crab species, 7 prawn species, 20 fish species, 76 butterfly species, 206 bird species and a few mammal species. The students gathered in school at 7am and boarded 2 buses at 7.30am.  We reached the Godrej Mangroves at 8am where we were met by the Godrej coordinator, Mr Hemant Kharkhanis and 2 other experts, Ms Krushi and Mr Shashank. They were our leaders for the trail. The group disembarked and was divided into 3 groups, one with each leader. The leaders gathered their batch at one spot and discussed the following important topics:

  • Importance of Mangroves in our environment
  • Types of Mangroves
  • Adaptations of the mangrove plants
  • Special features of the mangrove habitat
  • Godrej's efforts to save mangroves

The sessions were very interesting, insightful and the experts discussed all the questions put forward by the students. In between the sessions, the students got plenty of time to look around, eat their snacks and also have fun. They were taken up the Watch Tower from where they could see the surrounding areas especially the dumping yards ofDeonar,Mankhurd, Bhandup, etc. After a few hours, they were taken for an indoor session where the students were divided into groups and a fun quiz was conducted. The loft had a series of posters and other educational matter which was an interesting way of getting to know more about mangroves. It was an amazing learning experience and the students returned safely at 12.45pm.

Std VIII - Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum & Jijabai Udyan, Byculla Zoo:

On Saturday, August 19th, 95 students of Std VIII accompanied by 4 teachers organized an Educational Trip to Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum &  Jijabai Udyan where a talk was given by Miss Snehal on the architectural history of the museum for the first hour and thereafter the students were taken to Byculla Zoo.

Std IX - Maharashtra Nature Park, Dharavi:

186 students  of Std IX along with 7 teachers visited the Maharashtra Nature park for a field trip on August 19th. They were divided into 6 groups and went on different Nature trails around the park to learn about the Flora and fauna of the park. It was an enriching  3 hour walk in the park  and the students concluded the visit by  purchasing plants and vermicompost from the Maharashtra Nature Park.

Std X - Bandra Heritage Walk

On Saturday, August 19th, a group of 20 students of Std X, accompanied by teachers Misha, O'Neil and Vrushali, went for a Bandra Heritage & Sketch Walk.

At 7am, the walk began from Mount Mary Church and ended at St. Joseph's Convent, with several stops in between. While we completed most of what was on our itinerary, sadly, we couldn't visit the Bandra Fort as it was closed for maintenance. 

The students & teachers had an enjoyable time.

Std X - Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), Goregaon:

The students of Std X visited the BNHS on 19th August, 2023. After dividing the students into groups they were led by guides from the BNHS who specialized in various fields. The students went on the trails with these experts and explored the flora and fauna of the place. Students were fortunate to see a snake, deer, butterflies, insects, birds and a whole forest. An in depth explanation was given by the experts who also gave the students a chance to touch and feel various insects, frogs and crabs found there. The Powerpoint presentation enhanced the knowledge of students. The presenter helped students identify the call of the birds and recall what they had seen and experienced. He also showed them the hidden camera and videos on how they knew the big cat, the leopard was prowling around. He also gave them his experience when he saw the leopard at the BNHS. The trail was long and students were exhausted but  they  got a chance to experience and connect with nature. The students were happy with this firsthand experience in nature. They expressed their gratitude to the school for organizing this educational trip.

Std X - Tikuji-Ni-Wadi, Thane

As part of the school excursion trip this year, Std X students visited Tikuji-Ni-Wadi, the amusement park on February 1st, 2024. Around 106 students participated in the excursion and were accompanied by Ms. Donna and Ms. Sharalda, class teachers of Std 10. Students enjoyed the rides at the amusement park and the overall excursion. They were thankful and happy as they could spend some entertainment and relaxation time with their friends.
